The story of Mackenthun’s isn’t just about groceries—it’s about generations of service, resilience, and community spirit. It began over a century ago, when the Mackenthun family’s great-grandfather started a small grocery business around the turn of the 20th century. Though the sign on their building proudly reads “Since 1917,” the family knows their roots run even deeper.
Each generation has carried the torch forward, working side-by-side with family—grandfather to father to children. Today, Mackenthun’s holds the distinction of being the oldest grocery company in the state of Minnesota. But for them, longevity is only part of the story.
During the hardships of the Great Depression, the Mackenthuns made it a mission to ensure no family in Waconia went hungry. “There was not a family in all of Waconia that ever went hungry—my grandfather made sure they had what they needed.” That same compassion still guides the company today.
Now led by the next generation—Jamie and Jess—the business continues to thrive. With their fresh perspective, deep-rooted passion, and forward-thinking approach, they’re not just preserving the family legacy—they’re elevating it. “They’re going to be better at this than I ever was,” their father proudly shares. “They are so sharp, so good.”
But beyond operations and store shelves, the Mackenthuns are most proud of how they serve their communities. From donating thousands of dollars to local food shelves to launching initiatives like the “Bag Hunger” campaign with schools and daycares, their focus remains clear: giving back. “We don’t do it for the recognition—we do it because it’s the right thing to do.”
Their employees are not just staff—they’re neighbors, friends, and fellow volunteers. “A large percentage of our employees are involved in the community. That’s a big part of who they are.”
“If you don’t engage in your community, then why are you in business there?”
The Mackenthun legacy is one built on hard work, heart, and a deep love for the people they serve. And if their past is any indication, the future of Mackenthun’s is in very good hands.
