Dr. Pat Welter, a retired St. Cloud public school educator, has long been passionate about education and providing a safe place for women and children in Central Minnesota. She has advocated for women and children as a teacher, school administrator and active volunteer.

“Pat has set a standard for the contribution of time and energy to improve the lives of others in Central Minnesota,” said Sandy Neutzling, chair of the Women’s Fund ATHENA Award Committee.

Pat served on the board of directors for Anna Marie’s Alliance for 15 years with 10 of those years as chair. She oversaw the planning and construction of the St. Cloud shelter for women and children affected by domestic violence. She also has been instrumental in developing and implementing Anna Marie’s Connect program.

Pat is widely known for her contributions to the teaching profession as well, taking a key role in helping develop and share best practices on teacher support and evaluation.

“She’s the kind of leader that I think many women aspire to be,” said Meredith Boucher, a teacher mentored by Pat.

For these reasons and more, Pat received the 2014 ATHENA award from the Central Minnesota Community Foundation. This award honors exceptional women leaders who inspire others to achieve excellence in their professional and personal lives.
