Lee and Mary were residents of Central Minnesota for their entire lives. After completing a degree in business and economics at Saint John’s University, Collegeville, MN, in 1951, Lee spent most of his working years in the construction business. Mary graduated from the College of St. Catherine, St. Paul, MN, with a degree in nursing in 1953. She was a nurse for one year and then devoted her time to raising their eight children, all of whom grew up and settled throughout Central Minnesota. After the children were grown, Mary volunteered for a local hospice program and food shelf.

Lee enjoyed fishing and golfing in his free time while Mary was a bridge player. They were both involved in the Catholic church, attending private schools from grade school through college and being members of both St. Peter’s and St. Paul’s parishes in St. Cloud.

In order to give back to a community that had given them so much, Lee and Mary established their first fund, the Lee and Mary Torborg Family Fund in 1987, followed by two other funds during the 1990s. Their hope was to continue the legacy of private parochial education in the St. Cloud area. Therefore, many of the gifts from their funds are used to support these primary and secondary schools in Central Minnesota. Other charitable organizations also benefit from the Torborg’s philanthropy.
