Brainerd, MN — The Brainerd Lakes Area Community Foundation announced the appointment of two new members to its Board of Directors: Steve Mau and Don Hales, both bringing a wealth of experience, community engagement, and a deep love for the Lakes Area. Their terms begin July 1, 2025.
Don Hales has worn many hats over the course of his professional career—from two decades in the insurance and financial planning industries to entrepreneurship as the owner of Woodland Beach Resort on Bay Lake. A passionate community volunteer, Don has generously shared his time and talents with numerous nonprofits, including serving as Director of Outreach at Salem West during a critical staffing transition. A Bay Lake resident since 1996, Don and his wife Debra have four children and are excitedly anticipating their eighth grandchild.
Steve Mau brings global business experience and strong local leadership to the Community Foundation Board. After an international career with a Fortune 500 company, Steve and his wife Maureen moved to the Brainerd Lakes Area in 2002, where they raised their three children and purchased Brainerd General Rental. Steve has served as board chair for the Lakes Area Pregnancy Support Center, led the Brainerd Lakes Chamber of Commerce Board, and helped launch the Lakes Proud initiative. His commitment to faith, family, and community has guided his professional and philanthropic efforts.
The Community Foundation welcomes these new voices and extends heartfelt gratitude to Rene Millner, Lisa Haberman, and Jim Kraft for their dedicated service as outgoing board members. Their insights and leadership have been invaluable to the Foundation’s growth and continued impact.
Additionally, the Foundation gives special thanks to Tom Anderson who graciously served in an emeritus role over the past year. His wisdom and guidance have provided essential stability and continuity during a time of transformation and expansion for the Board of Directors.
“We’re incredibly fortunate to have leaders like Steve and Don stepping into board service,” said the Community Foundation Executive Director Terri Foster. “And we are deeply grateful to Rene, Lisa, Jim, and Tom for their contributions, commitment, and care for our mission of igniting generosity and building strong communities.”
