River Plan Unveiling

Community leaders unveiled in May a first-of-its-kind regional river plan designed to position the St. Cloud-area as a more vibrant river community.

The plan, a year in the making, outlines how the region will enhance the natural habitat and ecology of the river, create economic vitality, and provide better connections to the Mississippi River that runs through the communities of Sartell, Sauk Rapids and St. Cloud.

The public is invited to an open house on May 25 at the St. Cloud River's Edge Convention Center where the plan will be presented.

The Central Minnesota Community Foundation (CMCF) helped provide the necessary funding to ignite the Rediscovering the River planning process.  Ideas from more than 1,000 residents helped shape the plan.

Regional efforts to rediscover the river gained momentum three years ago with a series of events that the Community Foundation hosted to educate the community about the Mississippi River and the opportunities it presents.

The series kicked off in the summer of 2008 and culminated with a community visioning session. This led to a collaboration between the cities of St. Cloud, Sartell and Sauk Rapids to create a comprehensive river corridor plan.
