Rod Converse to receive 2011 BLACF Award in Philanthropy.

Brainerd Leaders Honored for Giving

It was a men’s Bible study group where the idea for the Brainerd Lakes Area Community Foundation took its first breath. Business Partners Kevin Close and Rod Converse believed something was missing in the area.

The concept of the Foundation was based on the simple principle of “you give where you live.”

“We’ve had some very generous and committed people throughout the years who have sat on the Foundation’s Board and those who have set up funds - people whose impact will last long after they are gone,” Kevin said (pictured at top).

The Foundation will honor Kevin and Rod for their impact in their community with the 2011 Award in Philanthropy at the annual dinner this month. Bernie Roberts worked with the men to start the foundation and received the 2007 Award in Philanthropy.

“I think we’re starting to understand that dollars can have a limited impact without a passionate time commitment to your chosen cause,” Kevin said. “The Lord works through people. There’s really no worthwhile change without that."

Kevin remains very involved with The Truth Project by Focus on the Family and Minnesota Teen Challenge. He has also been active with several ministerial groups both locally and nationally. He has had previous involvement with Kinship Partners, and is the past President of both the Brainerd Jaycees and Lions organizations.

Rod is the past President of the Board of Realtors and Charter President of the Brainerd Noon Sertoma Club.  Among his many personal charges is Compassion International, a Christian-based sponsorship ministry.

“You can’t save the world, but you can save the world for one,” Rod said, noting he traveled to Kenya in July where he met some of the children he and his wife Avis have sponsored over the years. “Whatever you do or go into, take a personal interest and let God work.”
